One Crop, One Crisis: Reunion Island Farmer Faces Fungal Threat to Banana Livelihood
A fungal pathogen spreads across the Indian Ocean, threatening the island's dominant banana variety and one farmer's sole income source.
Gilbert Bafinal stands in the fields of Ravine des Cabris, a man whose entire economic life rests on a single fruit. Ninety percent of his income flows from bananas. He has built nothing else, planned nothing else, imagined nothing else. When he speaks of the fungus that has not yet arrived on Reunion Island, his voice carries the particular weight of someone whose livelihood exists in a state of suspended dread. "For me, it would be very difficult because 90 percent of my revenues come from bananas," he says. "If the disease arrives on the island, it's total worry. I wouldn't know what else to do."
The disease he fears is Fusarium wilt Tropical Race 4, or TR4. It is not a virus, though the word "disease" carries the same finality. It is a fungus, and it has already moved through the Indian Ocean like a slow-moving storm system. Mayotte has seen it. The Comoros have seen it. Madagascar has seen it. Reunion Island, for now, has not. But the records show a clear pattern of progression, and the pattern suggests that what has happened elsewhere can happen here.
The threat is not theoretical. Reunion's banana plantations are dominated by the Grande Naine variety, a cultivar that represents more than 40 percent of global banana production and nearly 99 percent of all bananas exported worldwide. This same variety is particularly vulnerable to TR4. The fungus penetrates the root system and then invades the plant's vascular tissue methodically, like an infection spreading through veins. The leaves yellow. The plant withers. The plant dies. And then comes the worst part: the pathogen does not leave. Once established in soil, it persists indefinitely, its spores surviving in the earth for years, decades, perhaps longer. No chemical treatment can eradicate it.
Dr. Isabelle Robène, a researcher at Cirad within the Mixed Research Unit on Plant Populations and Bioaggressors in Tropical Environments (UMR PVBMT), has studied this progression. She speaks with the precision of someone who has watched the fungus work. "Once installed, it is very difficult, even impossible, to get rid of this pathogen," she explains. The implications for a farmer like Bafinal are not merely financial; they are existential. Entire parcels of land could become permanently unusable for current varieties. A farmer would have to uproot plants, change varieties entirely, replant, and wait several years before reaching sufficient production again. The economic void is difficult to contemplate.
Bafinal has considered resistant varieties. But here another anxiety takes hold. "For the client, what matters is taste," he says. "So yes, changing varieties, but I fear the taste won't be there anymore." This is not mere preference. In Reunion, the banana is not a luxury good; it is a staple. The island has already experienced banana shortages following cyclones, periods when prices on certain markets exceeded 8 or 10 euros per kilogram for months. But a cyclone passes. Its damage is temporary. TR4 is different. If the fungus becomes established in Reunion's soil, the island would turn increasingly toward imports. Transportation costs would ripple through the supply chain and onto the market stalls. The banana, the everyday fruit of Reunion, would gradually become something only the affluent could afford.
By contrast, the response on the ground has been organized and specific. Éric Lucas, assigned to diversity issues at the Reunion Chamber of Agriculture, speaks with the urgency of someone monitoring a threat that has not yet materialized but could at any moment. "We've had suspicions, alerts, but no confirmed cases," he says. The pattern in the region is clear enough. The fungus was detected in Mozambique in 2013. It arrived in Mayotte in 2019. It reached Grande Comore in 2023. Each island closer. Each detection a marker on a map that seems to be moving toward Reunion.
"The disease is very present in Mayotte, in the Comoros, and also in Madagascar," Lucas continues. "It's alarming in the measure that people travel a lot and can bring the disease." The vector is not dramatic. It is mundane. A cutting slipped into luggage. Contaminated soil beneath shoe soles. The casual movement of people between islands, the everyday commerce of family visits and trade, becomes the pathway for catastrophe.
The records document this risk in precise terms. In 2025, Reunion's customs authorities counted 157 instances of illegal introduction of plant products. Approximately 30 percent originated from mainland France. Twenty-five percent came from Madagascar. Nearly 20 percent came from Mayotte, including products arriving from the Comoros through that island. These are not hypothetical vectors; these are documented instances of material crossing borders in ways that circumvent the controls designed to prevent exactly this kind of introduction.
The regulatory framework exists. A prefectural order from April 24, 2017, prohibits the introduction of fresh plant material without required phytosanitary procedures, whether by mail or in luggage. Violators face up to three years of imprisonment and fines equal to twice the value of seized goods. The rules are clear. The penalties are severe. Yet the customs records show that material still arrives, and the rules exist in tension with the reality of human movement and the difficulty of enforcement.
In response, a surveillance system has been established on the ground. Approximately fifty sentinel parcels are monitored through an official system piloted by the Daaf and implemented by the Departmental Federation of Plant Protection Groups (FDGDON). Cirad has developed a rapid detection test usable directly in the field without heavy laboratory equipment. A positive result would be confirmed by the National Food, Environmental and Occupational Health Safety Agency (Anses) Reunion.
Robène emphasizes the necessity of strengthening "communication and awareness" among travelers coming from affected zones, mentioning biosecurity measures such as disinfecting shoe soles after time in a contaminated region. Lucas offers a simpler message to the general public: "At Reunion, our varieties are very good. We don't need to go looking elsewhere and bring back something new."
At this moment, no confirmed case of TR4 fusariosis exists on the island. All the work currently underway aims to maintain that status. The question that persists is whether collective vigilance will prove sufficient to hold the fungus at distance as exchanges between the islands of the Indian Ocean intensify. For producers like Gilbert Bafinal, standing in his fields at Ravine des Cabris, the answer determines whether he can continue to live from his work, and whether the banana remains, on Reunion's markets, a fruit accessible to all.
